Every weekend my friends would go to classical-music concerts-Bach, Beethoven, Haydn. People didn’t care about material possessions so much, they didn’t care about clothes, what shoes you wore, what kind of watch you wore, they didn’t care if you knew rich people. What constitutes Chinese reality, particularly from the eighties onward, is always changing. With The Invisibility Cloak, I thought back to 1980, when I was an undergraduate in Shanghai and I felt that life for Chinese people was extremely spiritually rich. How did you come up with the idea for the book? The exchange below is a condensed, edited version of their discussion, including some questions from the audience that day. He was joined by Morse, his translator and two moderators, Lydia H. Last month, Ge Fei visited New York, where he appeared in conversation at Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute. Then he reels in a promising but shady client who demands the best sound system in the world: an assignment that takes Cui to an unexpectedly dark place. The Invisibility Cloak is a comic tour de force Kirkus Reviews wrote that it “packs in wit, social commentary, and an emotional depth that will lift the reader’s spirits like few recent English-language books.” Cui designs and installs custom stereos for hyperrich audiophiles and intellectuals, for whom he has an unreserved contempt. Now, for the first time, one of his novels is available in English: 2012’s The Invisibility Cloak, translated by Canaan Morse. (Updated at 3:15 p.m.) Alexandria is under a Flash Flood Watch until 3 p.m. It will only return false when it is an empty string. One disadvantage of this method is that you cannot convert a string of "false" to a boolean value of false. You use this method to convert any string value to a boolean. You use it to invert the result of the single NOT operator: let stringValue1 = !!'true' This is when you can use the double NOT logical operator. Rather, you want to convert a string to a boolean, meaning when the string is empty, it should return false, and in every other case, it should return true. If it’s an empty string, it will return true otherwise, false: let stringValue1 = !'true' When you add the single NOT operator in front of a string, it will either return true or false. You should also know how to use the single NOT operator, which you can use to invert a result. How to Parse a String to a Boolean with the Double NOT Operator ( *!!*) Let boolValue = (/true/i).test(boolString) You will have to add the i flag at the end of the regular expression to allow for a case-insensitive match. This also is case sensitive: let boolString = "True" Let boolValue = (/true/).test(boolString) For example, if you want to test for the true string value, you'd do this: let boolString = "true" It is a vast programming topic and you can use regex as a pattern to match and test string character combinations.Ī very simple guide to regex will tell you that the expression is placed between two slashes ( /). How to Parse a String to a Boolean with Regex Let boolValue = (boolString.toLowerCase() = "true") Īnother method very similar to the identity operator is the regex method, where you can test if two values match. You can fix this using the toLowerCase() method, so it first converts the string value to the letter case that fits your comparison and then compares. This is a strict equality operator and will be strict with letter case comparison: let boolString = "True" If both values are the same, it will return the boolean value true, otherwise, it will return the boolean value false. In this case, you want to convert a string to a boolean, which means you'll compare it to the string "true". This implies that their letter case – and everything else – must also be the same. It will only return true if the two values being compared are the same. The strict operator is another name for the identity operator. How to Parse a String to a Boolean with the Identity Operator ( =) If you are not in a rush, let’s understand each of the methods and lots more. In case you are in a rush, here is how you can do it: // Using identity operatorĬonsole.log((boolString = "true")) // true / falseĬonsole.log((/true/).test(boolString)) // true In this article, you will learn how to convert a string to a boolean value using different methods in JavaScript. All values are either truthy or falsy, but most values are loosely equal to neither true nor false. When you're manipulating data, receiving values from forms, and dealing with data in other ways, these values may take the incorrect datatype.Īssume you want your value to be a boolean with either true or false, but it is stored as a string – "true" or "false." It becomes challenging to use for your intended purpose, so you must first convert these boolean string values to actual boolean values. Truthy values are even more unlikely to be loosely equal to true. Objects are always truthy, but their primitive representation may be loosely equal to false."0" (and other string literals that are not "" but get coerced to 0) is truthy but loosely equal to false.NaN, undefined, and null are falsy but not loosely equal to false. In general, falsiness and = false differ in the following cases: Comparing strings and booleans results in both being converted to numbers, and they both become 0, so = false is true. However, when comparing with false, which is a primitive, is also converted to a primitive, which is "" via (). Traveling to France during Covid-19: What you need to know before you goīut for many juilletistes, a less crowded beach is more valuable than a sunnier and hotter one. Each year the city organizes a grand firework show for July 14, the French national day, accompanied by public events and private parties. “It’s like Christmas but in summer.”įor Louap, a proud Parisian, the reason why August is better than July for vacation is simple: Paris is too exciting to leave in July. “Everyone in France looks forward to summer vacations,” says Julien Louap, a 30-year-old aoûtien. To understand why some people in France prefer August vacations and others prefer July is to make headway into understanding what it is to be French. The monthly preference of French sunseekers may seem a mere curiosity to the rest of the world, but for those who live there, it’s a serious matter – and one that annually grinds the entire nation to a standstill.įor anyone thinking of visiting France in the summer months, it’s also worth taking note, especially if they don’t want to find their favorite Paris restaurant closed for weeks, or if they want to avoid one of the world’s biggest traffic snarl-ups. Now people can choose the locations, including popular vacation destinations. To appease these fervent holidaymakers, authorities have agreed to waive guidelines that insisted second vaccinations must generally be received in the same place as the first. Until it did, the public outrage over the prospect that rigid vaccination plans might jeopardize people’s summer getaways was enough to unite one of France’s biggest divides: “juilletistes” – those who holiday in July – and “aoûtiens” – those who prefer August. So much so that the government is willing to bend its own Covid vaccination policies to let French workers hit the beach without worrying about their second injection. There is a SPICE viewer for Windows desktop. so this is not from experience, just general understanding: Plus I've always setup a RDP connection for Windows guests. Now keep in mind that I don't run Windows desktop to connect to my virtual machines. I am saying that the guest console is accessed via VNC or SPICE and you can configure the guest console to be accessible over the network. Note that I am not talking about running a VNC server on the guest. Then connect to those using a native VNC/SPICE client on your Windows desktop. You can configure the host to allow access to those VNC or SPICE connections on your network. It connects to the guests console over localhost. All Virt-manager does for the guest desktop is embed a VNC or SPICE client into it's GUI. Well you should be able to cut most of that out. Win 7 client running putty -> SSH to Host -> X Forwarding -> VirtManager -> VNC connection from Host to Guest Win7 VM. Because of client's draconian VPN policy, I can't work around this by dropping text files into a shared folder or via something like pastebin.ĮDIT - For clarity, what I'm doing here looks something like this: The only issue I have is that Paste via Ctrl-V or the Right-Click context menu is broken such that I cannot paste from my local machine into the remote VM's console window, which is a bit of a pain. My solution is to SSH via Putty to the Linux Host machine (with X forwarding enabled), start the VirtManager app, and connect to the Win7 VM via it's VM console and work there. Remember, I can't just RDP into the Win7 VM because once I connect to the VPN inside it, the LAN connection will break so the RDP drops. My desktop CPU doesn't have VM extensions (I didn't check that till after I bought it) so I'm trying to use my VM lab server (Debian Linux with KVM-QEMU) that's in my basement. Of course the client doesn't see any of this as a problem (I wonder how their onsite devs get anything done this way) so, my solution is to spin up a Win7 VM and install their VPN client inside it. which means while I'm connected and writing code, I can't read any of the docs. Aside from being a hassle, this is a work-stopper problem because all the project documentation is on google drive. I have a client that thinks it's perfectly acceptable to have their VPN solution deny network connections to anything outside their LAN while you are connected to it. I need to be able to paste into a Win7 VM's KVM VirtManager console window as I would be able to if I used RDP (which I can't, see below). |
